Common Questions

Selling silver, answered

How much is sterling silver worth?

Sterling is 92.5% pure silver, which is why it is marked 925. Its metal value is the weight of that silver content multiplied by the silver spot price, which is quoted per troy ounce and changes every trading day. Weighted pieces such as some candlesticks have a filled base, so only the silver itself counts. Every piece is weighed and tested in front of you, free of charge.

How do I know if my silver is sterling or plated?

Look for marks that say sterling, 925, or a lion passant: those mean solid silver. Silver-plate and EPNS are not. If you are unsure, bring it in. We test at the counter and tell you honestly which is which.

Is silver-plated flatware worth anything?

Usually very little as metal. Silver plate is a thin layer of silver over a base metal such as copper or nickel silver, so there is not much silver to recover. Marks like EP, EPNS, “silver plate” or “quadruple plate” point to plate. If you cannot tell, bring it in: testing is free, and you will be told plainly which pieces are solid.

Do you buy sterling silver flatware and tea sets?

Yes. Roma Jewelry buys sterling flatware, full sets, partial sets and odd pieces, plus tea and coffee services, trays, bowls, candlesticks and other holloware. Bring what you have; we sort sterling from silver-plate at the counter.

Do you buy .999 silver bars and rounds?

Yes. We buy .999 fine silver bars, rounds and bullion, as well as pre-1965 US silver coinage. Weight and fineness are confirmed in front of you before any offer.

Which US coins contain silver?

Dimes, quarters and half dollars dated 1964 or earlier are 90% silver, as are Morgan and Peace silver dollars. Kennedy half dollars from 1965 to 1970 are 40% silver, and wartime nickels from 1942 to 1945 contain 35%. Roma Jewelry buys pre-1965 US silver coinage. Some dates and mint marks are worth more than their silver, so do not clean them first.

Does tarnish lower what you will pay?

No. Tarnish is surface oxidation and does not change the silver content. Do not polish pieces before bringing them in. Cleaning can damage hallmarks and, for coins, almost always lowers value.
