How selling gold at Roma Jewelry works

01

We test the karat in front of you

Acid testing and an electronic tester, at the counter, where you can watch. Unmarked pieces are tested free. Plated and gold-filled items get identified honestly rather than quietly bundled in.

02

We weigh it on a legal-for-trade scale

The scale faces you. Stones, clasps and non-gold parts come out of the gold weight, and we tell you what we are excluding and why rather than discounting a total afterwards.

03

You get a firm cash offer, same day

A clear offer at the counter, take it or leave it, with no pressure either way. The appraisal is free whether you sell or not.

Common Questions

Selling gold on Long Island, answered

How much is my gold worth?

Three things decide it: the karat, the weight, and the gold spot price on the day you sell. Karat tells you what share of the piece is pure gold, the weight tells you how much metal there is, and the spot price puts a market value on that pure gold. At Roma Jewelry the karat test and the weighing happen at the counter in front of you, and the appraisal is free, so you hear the number before you decide anything.

How is the price of gold set?

Gold trades worldwide at a spot price quoted in US dollars per troy ounce of pure gold. A troy ounce is about 31.1 grams, a little heavier than a kitchen ounce. The spot price moves throughout the trading day, so an offer for scrap or jewelry reflects the market at the time you sell, adjusted for the purity and weight of your pieces.

What do 10K, 14K and 18K stamps mean?

Karat measures purity in 24 parts. 10K is 10/24, about 41.7% gold; 14K is about 58.3% and is often stamped 585; 18K is 75% and often stamped 750; 22K is about 91.7%; and 24K is essentially pure. So 10K is real gold and does have value, just less per gram than 14K or 18K. A stamp is a starting point rather than proof, which is why every piece is tested.

Do I need ID to sell gold?

Yes. Roma Jewelry is in the Town of Oyster Bay, and the Town of Oyster Bay Code, Chapter 192, requires licensed secondhand dealers to verify each seller’s identity from an official government-issued document, record it, and have the seller sign in the dealer’s presence. A driver license or passport works. The same chapter bars dealers from buying from minors.

Will you test gold that has no karat stamp?

Yes, free of charge. Roma Jewelry tests unmarked gold with both acid and electronic testing at the counter in Massapequa. Plenty of genuine gold carries no legible stamp, and plenty of stamped pieces are plated. Testing is the only way to know, and it costs you nothing either way.

Do you buy broken or damaged gold?

Yes. Roma Jewelry buys gold in any condition: tangled chains, bent clasps, single earrings with no match, class rings, dental gold and scrap. Condition only matters for pieces that should stay intact rather than be melted, which we flag for you.

Is it better to sell gold to a pawn shop or a jeweler?

A pawn shop is built to lend money against collateral, not to buy metal outright. A licensed local jeweler that buys gold every day can test and weigh at the counter and pay same-day cash. The real test is whether you can watch the testing and the scale.
